HYDERABAD: State CPI secretary K. Narayana began an indefinite hunger strike at New Hafeezpet, in Seri Lingampally mandal on Friday demanding distribution of surplus land to the poor in survey numbers 76-80 in the area.

The land is spread over 1,000 acres.

The party contends that courts had ruled in favour of descendents of a landlord because of ineffective defence put up by Revenue officials allegedly for various considerations.

Camp inaugurated

Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, CPI MP, inaugurated the hunger strike camp in the presence of a large number of party activists and supporters.

Poor people, mostly women, had occupied the land in New Hafeezpet on October 12 with the support of CPI activists and pitched in party flags.

Set deadline

On that day Mr. Narayana had set October 25 as the deadline for the Government to declare the surplus land in the area so that it could be distributed among the poor. Since the administration had failed to respond, he launched the fast.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sudhakar Reddy wanted officials to immediately identify the surplus land and issue orders taking its control. He said the fast would continue till this demand was conceded by the Government.

Aziz Pasha, Member of Parliament, and Jelly Wilson, Member of Legislative Council, were among those present.
