CHENNAI: The State Government will come out with a comprehensive Information Technology (IT) Security policy to protect its e-governance project and to stay ahead of others in the race.

Delivering his address at iSec 2007, a two-day information security exhibition-cum-conference organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), here on Friday, IT Secretary C. Chandramouli said, “Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network (TNSWAN) is in place and we are using the network to implement e-governance in various departments. TNSWAN will be used for intra-governmental activities and as secured payment gateway for which it needs a rigid Information Security (IS) policy.”

“The guidelines will be drawn on the lines of the SETS (Society for Electronic Transactions and Security) prepared by the Centre. This would enable us to know whether the database has been fiddled with or not, who can login into the database and how audit trials can be generated etc. Industries also need some sort of certification. Right now, we are seeking inputs from industry bodies for finalisation of IS policy,” he added.

Projected growth

Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna, who released a handbook on Information Security, said that the Indian IT sector was projected to grow at 21 per cent over the next five years to touch $65 billion and hence there was a need to address IT security on an urgent basis. Despite the setting up of cyber crime in all major cities there has been an increase in the cyber crime rate due to lack of awareness.

Microsoft Platform Strategy Manager Rohit Kumar Rai said that the best way to tackle hacking was to encrypt it and hinted that information theft is likely to be on the rise in the coming days.

SICCI Executive Committee Member Ar.Rm. Arun said that by 2010 global companies would spend $60 billion on IS. Currently, global companies spend 20 per cent of their IT budget on IS as against 5-15 per cent by Indian firms.

“Given the fact that nearly $120 million worth of mobiles are being lost or stolen in the country every year, the users have to protect information, contact details and telephone numbers as these could be misused. Nearly 69 per cent of information theft is carried out by current and ex-employees and 31 per cent by hackers. India has to go a long way in protecting the vital information,” he said.
