Urdu Academy holds first meeting

Resolutions passed on aid to authors and libraries, publishing a magazine

CHENNAI: The newly constituted Governing Council of the Tamil Nadu State Urdu Academy held its first meeting earlier this month.

Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy presided.

The Council nominated six members for inclusion in the Standing Council and passed a resolution on implementing various schemes such as financial assistance to authors and libraries, granting awards of excellence and publishing a magazine.

The Academy thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for reserving 3.5 per cent for Muslims in education and employment and for sanctioning the annual grant (Rs.10 lakh) to the Academy for the first time.

Vice-Chairman of the Academy, the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali; Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan; BC/MBC and MW secretary N. Vasudevan; Special Secretary, Finance, Praveen Kumar; Secretary and Registrar KM Ashafaqur Rahman were present.
