Judicial probe withdrawn

Decision to avoid overlapping in Rizwanur case: Buddhadeb

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government announced on Friday withdrawal of the judicial inquiry that it had ordered into the death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman.

“We have decided to withdraw the order for the judicial inquiry after considering the overall situation, the views of the general public and particularly that of the Rahman family which does not want any other inquiry but the one being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation,” said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

The decision was taken to avoid any “overlapping” in investigations. “The CBI is conducting its inquiry, then another agency might do the same; this is neither possible nor desirable,” he added.

Rahmans’ body was found lying by the side of the railway tracks near here on September 21, only weeks after his marriage to Priyanka whose family was opposed to it.

“The CBI inquiry had been ordered by the Calcutta High Court a day after the formation of a judicial commission of inquiry. In view of the new developments and after administrative, political and legal consultations it has been decided to withdraw the judicial inquiry,” Mr. Bhattacharjee explained.

“I had to wait and see what it [the CBI] was doing” before taking a decision “which I cannot take on my own but only after consultations as part of a process which makes and decides on policy matters,” the Chief Minister said, when asked about the timing of the withdrawal of the judicial inquiry.
