What Yechury said on reservation for Muslims

Sitaram Yechury, Member of the Polit Bureau of the CPI(M), has issued the following clarification concerning the CPI(M)’s position on reservation for Muslims attributed to the speech made by him at Kozhikode on October 25, 2007. The following is what he said:

“The demand for reservations for Muslims is being raised. According to our Constitution this is not permissible as reservation are permitted only on the basis of caste. Any change would require a constitutional amendment. This would require a consensus amongst political parties which is not possible given position of the BJP and the communal forces. In any case there is a Supreme Court ruling that the quantum of reservation cannot go beyond 50 per cent. Therefore, the CPI(M) has been advocating that Muslims who are to be brought under reservation should be included in the OBC reservation.”
