Nanjil Sampath attacked in Madurai prison

MADURAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam propaganda secretary Nanjil Sampath was allegedly assaulted in the Madurai central prison on Friday.

A few inmates accused in the Dinakaran newspaper attack case allegedly roughed him up around noon. Mr. Sampath was reportedly rescued by jail warders and moved to safety.

On the directions of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, he was shifted to the Tiruchi central prison in the evening.

The issue was brought to the notice of the Madurai Bench at 4.30 pm on Friday. M. Ajmal Khan, counsel for Mr. Sampath, told a Division Bench comprising Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and S. Palanivelu that a gang led by ‘Attack’ Pandi, prime accused in the Dinakaran newspaper attack case, had brutally attacked his client.

Stating that he would file a habeas corpus petition by Monday, counsel apprehended that Mr. Sampath’s life would be at peril during the weekend. Hence, he urged the court to issue suitable directions.

The Judges called for one of the Government Advocates and orally directed him to instruct prison officials to provide sufficient protection to the MDMK leader.

Mr. Sampath was arrested on charges of making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at a public meeting held in Batlagundu on Wednesday.
