PANAJI: The National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE), Goa-based anti-tobacco non-governmental organisation, on Friday issued legal notice to actor Shah Rukh Khan for allegedly violating the provisions of the anti-tobacco legislation by smoking in public during two recent events — Australia-India Twenty20 cricket match in Mumbai and the leadership summit of The Hindustan Times in Delhi. Releasing the copies of the legal notice at a press conference, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, general secretary of NOTE, said here on Friday that they would sue Mr. Khan for allegedly promoting smoking in public places, which is prohibited under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. The NGO has given Mr. Khan 15 days to explain the alleged violation before filing a criminal complaint in the appropriate court. The NGO has described, in its notice Mr. Khan’s acts as “illegal, indecent and unethical” and observed that the acts were watched on television by millions of people, including children. Dr. Salkar also condemned the telecast of such images by Doordarshan during live telecast of the match.
