CHENNAI: If you want to know the distance between the earth and the moon or watch windmills providing electricity, a visit to Madras Christian College School might be useful. Levers, wires, mud and water, cardboard, thermocol, wood and plastic were transformed into devices, models and projects, ranging from a security and fire alarm system to a model sewage treatment plant. Behind each of the projects stood a smiling student, who explained how each project could be put to use. ‘Laser MCCS 2007’, a two-day inter-school science exhibition organised by the school in Chetpet, saw students from 23 schools in the city display projects based on various themes including vedic mathematics, transport and communication, earth science and energy. Each school sent three teams to represent them in different categories. In an attempt to address congestion and provide means for disabled persons to travel, two students of Standard IX of MCC School had built a conveyor belt-like device that ran overhead between models of the Central and Park stations. A skeleton dance by the students of MCC School also attracted a lot of attention. The function was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor of Anna University D. Viswananthan and principal of Madras Christian College V.J. Philip. On Saturday, professors from various colleges in the city will view the exhibits and judge the competition. Prizes include a DVD player and books, said school principal G.J. Manohar.
