TRIBUTES: Officers and soldiers at the Pangode Military Camp observed Infantry Day on Saturday. Thiruvananthapuram: The Pangode Military station here observed Infantry Day on Saturday. October 27 marks the Indian Army’s heroic operation to protect Srinagar from incursion by armed tribesmen in 1958. Station Commander Brigadier P.M. Hariz laid a wreath at the war memorial in honour of fallen soldiers. Retired Army officer Brigadier Vijayan and Colonel Ajith Kumar were present. Senior officers of the 91 Infantry Brigade were also present. An armed squad in ceremonial uniform presented arms at the war memorial. It was followed by Shoka Shastra in remembrance of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of their duty. The soldiers observed a two-minute silence. The 16 Madras Army Band played the tune of the “Last Post”. Infantry Day also reiterates the primacy of Indian Army’s battle hardened infantry divisions which continue to protect the country’s terrain from external and internal threats. It operates in some of the most inhospitable terrains in the world, ranging from the scorching Rajasthan deserts to the frozen heights of the Siachen Glacier. Infantry is also referred to as the “Queen of the battle” because of its immense capabilities and its vital role in war.
