HOMAGE TO A HERO: Union Minister (second from left) S. Regupathi, paying homage to Bhagat Singh in Pudukottai on Saturday. Collector D. Uthirakkumaran (left) is seen. PUDUKOTTAI: Freedom fighter and revolutionary Bhagat Singh is a role model to present day youth. Following his footsteps, they should develop courage and come forward to sacrifice everything for the sake of the nation, Union Minister of State of Environment and Forests S. Regupathy said. He was speaking at Bhagat Singh’s centenary celebrations, organised by the district administration at Sri Brahdambal Government Boys Higher Secondary School here on Friday. Mr. Regupathy said the State government had ordered the holding of such events to pay tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the nation and to enable the younger generation to know the valiant deeds of the national heroes. The celebration of Bhagat Singh’s centenary in the southern State of Tamil Nadu was proof of the sense of unity prevailing among the people of the country. Recalling the important role played by Bhagat Singh, the Minister said nothing in the world, even the death sentence, could deter him. When he was to be taken to the gallows, he insisted that he be given five more minutes to complete a book on Lenin. “I am conversing with another revolutionary and let me finish the conversation,” Bhagat Singh told the authorities. This showed his grit and courage. In his presidential address, Collector D. Uthirakumaran said such events would enable the student community to understand the sacrifices made by freedom fighters to free India from the clutches of the British. Alangudi MLA S. Rajasekaran, District Panchayat Chairman C. Muthusamy, Chief Educational Officer S. Sellam spoke. Mr. Regupathy unveiled Bhagat Singh’s portrait and distributed prizes to winners of oratorical and essay writing contests.
