Neglected: The poor condition of a road in Chitradurga city. Chitradurga: The district administration here has sought Rs. 7 crore from the Government for the conduct of repair work owing to damage caused by rain, and relief operations in the district. According to a preliminary assessment, the damage caused in the district has been estimated at between Rs. 6 to 7 crore. Molakalmur taluk has witnessed heavy losses, and to provide immediate relief to victims of the taluk, the district administration has sought Rs. 1 crore from the Government. According to a preliminary assessment, eight houses in Chitradurga city had been destroyed, while 563 houses had been partially damaged in the district. Houses damagedAccording to sources in the Deputy Commissioner’s office, 65 houses in Challakere taluk had been partially damaged, while 57 in Holalkere, 25 in Hosadurga and 139 houses in Molakalmur taluk had suffered minor damage. As many as 38 cattle head died, while crops worth several lakh rupees had been destroyed. The sources said that five hectares of banana plantation and one hectare of onion crop in Hiriyur taluk had been destroyed. Around 15 hectares of groundnut and maize crop in Molakalmur taluk has also suffered heavy damage. Some sources also said that check-dams, roads and bunds in several parts of the district were affected. “A complete assessment is yet to be made, but considering the loss caused at present in various parts of the district, we have sent a proposal to the Government for the release of funds immediately”, said Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas here on Saturday. PriorityHe told The Hindu, that as soon as the funds were released, priority would be given for reconstruction of bridges, roads, check-dams and bunds. He said since rain had destroyed several residential buildings in the district, and standing crop had also been damaged, a fixed amount of money would be given to victims immediately after the receipt of funds. FundsHe felt that the district may not receive the funds immediately as the Government was likely to accord priority to Belgaum and Davangere districts, which have suffered more on account of rain than Chitradurga. “We are hoping the Government will release at least Rs. 3 crore on priority for relief work in the district,” he said. Road conditionOn the poor condition of the main road from Challakere Gate to Mahatma Gandhi Circle of the city, he said Rs. 40 lakh had been released to the Public Works Department (PWD). Another Rs. 40 lakh would be released soon for the reconstruction of the road. “Meanwhile, officials of the National Highways have been instructed to undertake patching-up of the road to avoid accidents,” he said.
