Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) on Saturday urged the government to extend relief package to farmers in rain-affected areas. In a statement here, president of the AIKS unit V.K.Nilavalagan said farmers in the Union Territory had incurred heavy loss owing to the rain. Paddy crop in Karaikal, Bahour, Tirukkanur and Karikkalampakkam had been submerged, he said. Several villages and habitations in the urban areas were water-logged, he said, adding that manual workers had become jobless. Mr. Nilavalagan urged the government to provide cash relief for crop loss at the rate of Rs. 5,000 per acre for paddy and Rs.10,000 per acre for banana and tapioca. He demanded immediate distribution of the incentive for paddy cultivators. As part of the relief package, Rs.10,000 should be provided for wall collapse. The affected families should be distributed 20 kg rice, 3 kg palmolene, 3 kg sugar and 5 litres of kerosene. The government should come forward to enhance ‘Deepavali’ incentive for the unorganised sector workers to Rs.2,000, he said, calling for issuance of G.O. on farm loan waiver. He also urged the government to reduce interest on farm loan to 4 per cent. The sugar mill in Ariyur should give priority to the sugarcane grown in the Puducherry region, he added.
