Minister reviews implementation of schemes in Tiruvannamalai TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare A. Tamilarasi has called upon Chief Educational Officers and District Educational Officers to inspect Adi Dravidar Welfare Schools to improve standards. She was speaking at a meeting organised at the Collectorate here on Saturday to review the progress of the schemes implemented by the Department of Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare. Ms. Tamilarasi said out of Rs.641crore allotted to the Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare in 2007-2008, Rs.492 crore was earmarked for education. The increase in allocation improved the standards of welfare schools, she said. A special grant of Rs. 25 crore has been provided to impart vocational training to Adi Dravidars who have passed Plus Two. Vocational training is being provided to girls who have passed Standard X and Plus Two after studying employment opportunities available to them. Some of them trained as airhostesses are working in private airline companies, Ms. Tamilarasi said. A total of 148 Adi Dravidars, who passed I.A.S. preliminary examinations, have been provided Rs. 25,000 each to help them prepare for the remaining examinations. Compound walls would be constructed in a phased manner from the next financial year at Adi Dravidar welfare students’ hostels. Steps have been taken to ensure that all hostels to be constructed in future had compound walls, toilets and drinking water facilities, Ms. Tamilarasi said. Financial allotment to the Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare would be made to various districts based on the population of Adi Dravidars and tribals from the next financial year, she added. The allocation for the department, which was Rs.453 crore in 2004-2005, rose to Rs.567 crore in 2006-2007 and to Rs.641 crore in 2007-2008. A sum of Rs.300 crore was allotted to the schemes implemented through the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, Ms. Tamilarasi said. Food Minister E.V. Velu, who presided over the meeting, requested Ms. Tamilarasi to provide additional allocation of funds to the “educationally backward” Tiruvannamalai district in the next financial year.
