VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy has offered “relocation assistance” to 63 families living along the coast at Chinnamudaliayar Chavadi Kuppam near here.

Mr. Ponmudy and Collector Brajendra Navnit visited the village on Saturday and interacted with the fishermen. The Minister said the State government has proposed to build 263 permanent houses for the people living in “vulnerable areas” and till the completion of the works, they could move to other places. The government would extend a monthly assistance of Rs. 500 to each family, he said.

Mr. Navnit said as Chinnamudaliar Chavadi Kuppm came under urban areas, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board would take up construction of houses there. At Bommaiarpalayam, a rural area, the District Rural Development Agency would construct 253 permanent houses. Land has been identified at both the places and the construction would begin soon, Mr. Navnit said.

Earlier, Mr. Ponmudy told reporters that Villupuram district had received an average of 25.04 mm rain owing to the monsoon. There was no significant damage to crops or property, he said.

The level in the Veedur dam, Manimutharu dam, Gomukhi dam and Sathanur dam was lower than their maximum capacity, Mr. Ponmudy said.

A compensation of Rs. one lakh has been given to the kin of three persons who were struck dead by lightning in the past two days, he added.
