New insights into cardiac problems

Staff Reporter

Three-day conference on cardiac care

NEW DELHI: To discuss the latest developments in the field of cardiac care, the seventh three-day conference of the Asian Society of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia is being held at India Habitat Centre here.

The seminar, which started on Saturday, is hosting well-known doctors, including cardiologists, from several countries including the US, Britain, Germany, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Indonesia, Sweden, Saudi Arabia and India. The meeting is aimed at providing an insight into growing cardiac problems worldwide and the new developments in the field of cardiac care.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yatin Mehta of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said: “The advent of robotic surgery has revolutionised conventional heart surgery, which calls for four-six hours of concentration, expertise and dexterity on the operating table for the surgeon. Robotic surgery saves most of the strain, plus the patient can go home soon after the operation.”

Talking about the scenario of cardiac problems in India and the factors that have contributed to increasing the cardiac problems, Dr. Mehta added: “The prevalence rate of coronary heart disease in the urban population is more than three times than in the rural population. The incidence rate of stroke is 200 per 100,000 people. Every year approximately 25,000 coronary bypass operations and 12,000 angioplasties are carried out. In the past five decades, the rate of coronary disease prevalence among the urban population has risen from 4 per cent to 11 per cent. About 12.5 per cent of adult urban males suffer from coronary artery disease. Each year between 48,000 and 1,28,000 children are born with congenital heart diseases.”
