Victors vow to work hard to win the all-India finals

PUDUCHERRY: In the quizmaster’s words “this team was brilliant.” Having scored 71 points, A.R. Pranavi and P. Swetha of St. Patricks Higher Secondary School, who won the regional round in The Hindu Young World Quiz – 2007 on Saturday, say they will work hard to top the all-India finals to be held at Visakhapatnam on November 21.

The duo received their prizes, including a cash prize of Rs. 8,000, from Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi, who was the chief guest at the prize distribution function.

In his address, Mr Mithi said that school education had to come to terms with the fast changes taking place in the economic sector through liberalisation and globalisation. The school education system has to consider these aspects in preparing the curriculum, to meet the basic requirements of the changing society, he added.

“Quiz a mind game”

Quiz, he said, was a mind game in which not only the knowledge and skill of the participants in a wide array of subjects was tested but also their quickness to recollect information. Mr. Mithi said quiz competitions such as The Hindu Young World Quiz provided an opportunity for the young to compete with their counterparts from other schools across the country and assess their skills and capabilities.

Appreciating The Hindu for conducting the quiz competition as an annual feature to provide an opportunity to budding talents to exhibit their skills, he said, forums like these help children to sharpen their competitive skills and tp put them on a learning curve.

He also presented the prizes to the teams that came in second and third. The runners up, Anish Mohan and K. Srinivas of St. Patricks HSS, won 49 points. They were presented with a cash prize of Rs. 6,000. The team from St. Joseph of Cluny School, Puducherry, S. Nivetha and Amrita Ghosh, who came third were presented a cash award of Rs. 4,000.

The Quizatouille team, Pranavi and Swetha, who train in a quiz school, said it was a great feeling to win and that they would work even harder for the finals. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan had set questions for a total of six rounds, including a buzzer round, multiple choice, a round where he would provide the answers and the teams had to give the questions, and one round that had penalty marks for wrong answers.

The questions that he asked included the model of car that Harry Potter and his friend Ron flew in the movie (Ford Anglia), who the second Vice-President of India was (Dr. Zakir Hussain), what the Carnatic equivalent of the Hindustani raga ‘Malkauns’ was (Hindolam) and which State was called Utkal (Orissa). The preliminary round, which saw a total of 225 teams from 90 schools in and around Puducherry, had questions such as who the wife of Lakshmana was in the Ramayana, the medical name of the calf bone, the water spell in Harry Potter, and the musical instrument that is played by T.H. `Vikku’ Vinayakram. These questions were based on articles that had appeared on past issues of The Hindu and school textbooks.

The team that wins the finals will receive a cash prize of Rs. 16,000. The team coming second and third will get Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 4,000 respectively. The Hindu will meet the cost of travel to the venue of the finals, boarding and lodging for the teams that qualify for the all-India level event and for one accompanying parent or teacher.
