Gaya: Seven children have died and nearly 150 were taken ill over the last one week in Bihar’s Gaya district where Meningo-Encephalitis is fast taking an epidemic form, prompting the authorities to send an SOS to the State Government for immediate intervention. Sources at the Magadh Medical College Hospital said on Saturday that seven children had died from complications related to the disease and about 150 were admitted for various durations over the past one week with 33 still undergoing treatment. The deceased were identified as Bharti Kumari (4), Soni Kumari (3), Dharam Kumar (10), Sapna Kumari (8), Sanju (7), Babu Bhuiyan (6) and Guddu Kumar (3). Magadh division Comissioner, K P Ramaiah, who visited the hospital along with Gaya District Magistrate Jitendra Sharma, admitted shortage of Manitol, the drug used for treatment of the disease, and said he had sent an SOS to Health Minister Chandramohan Rai seeking its adequate supply. Apart from seeking adequate quantity of medicine, Mr. Ramaiah said, he had asked the district administration to launch a disinfection drive in waterlogged areas on a war footing. - PTI
