INDORE: Ninety-six MoUs for projects worth Rs.1,14,256 crore were signed in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan during the two-day Global Investors’ Summit-2007 organised here at the initiative of the State Government. The summit ended on Saturday. Addressing a Press conference at the end of the summit, the Chief Minister described the event as historic and added that the media had played a crucial role in attracting the investors’ attention towards Madhya Pradesh. He said the State Government wanted to reduce excessive pressure on agriculture by facilitating rapid industrial growth, which would lead to creation of more jobs. “This calls for regular investment,” he said, “adding that it was to pursue this objective that he had travelled to Singapore, Malaysia, United Kingdom, the US and also organised road shows and investors’ meet at Khajuraho, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The Indore Summit was a culmination of continuous efforts over 18 months. Some important sectors that have caught the investors’ attention are tourism, food processing, information technology, mining, textiles, education, energy, urban development, infrastructure and health. Of the 96 MoUs signed during the summit, 15 worth Rs.2,224 crore cover the food processing sector, 48 worth Rs.46,363 crore cover a large gamut of industries and six worth Rs.54,846 crore cover the energy sector. Ten MoUs worth Rs.2,713 crore are linked to education, four worth Rs.1,685 crore are linked to health and 12 worth Rs.6,407 crore to Information Technology. Addressing the valedictory function earlier, Mr. Chauhan said that “this is not the conclusion but the beginning of a new phase of continuous investment.” He said implementation of the MOUs would be monitored on a monthly basis and he would involve himself in this exercise. The valedictory function touched the popular chord when PWD and IT Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya responding to the audience demand sang the popular number “Mera rang de basanti chola….” The audience joined him singing in chorus and clapping to the beats.
