VISAKHAPATAM: An order issued by the Commercial Taxes Department to freeze the bank accounts of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for alleged default in payment of taxes has put the management and the employees in an agitated mood.
Sources said on Saturday that on instructions from Hyderabad office, the officials issued notices to the banks to attach the accounts and recover over Rs.500 crores which the department claims the VSP had to pay towards commercial tax dues for several years.
However, a senior official of the VSP felt that the decision was `irrational and unjust’ at a time when the AP High Court had reserved the judgement after hearing arguments from both sides.
It had also told the department not to take any unpleasant action against the public sector company which was accorded mini ratna status by the Centre in recognition of its performance. “We will abide by the court order,” the official said.
