‘Congress not caught unawares’

Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday denied that it was caught unawares by the political developments in Karnataka.

“The party was not keen on forming this kind of opportunist government,” party general secretary and Chairman of the Media Committee, Veerappa Moily, told The Hindu here.

“If the party were keen to form the government, it would not have supported the decision for placing Karnataka Assembly in suspended animation,” he said, before leaving for Bangalore.

Mr. Moily said the Congress was keen on “elections” and not on being part of any “gambling and hotch-potch” government. “We want a clean, secular government in the State.”

Commenting on the recent visit of Janata Dal (Secular) MLA, M.P. Prakash to New Delhi to probe the possibilities of government formation with the Congress in the State , a senior AICC leader said he was sent to “test the waters” with the Congress leadership. He returned “empty-handed.”
