10 Tigers killed

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka military claimed on Saturday that at least 10 cadres of the LTTE were killed, similar numbers seriously injured in “pre-emptive strikes” carried out by troops at the Wanni Forward Defense Lines (FDLs).

In a statement here, the Ministry said troops continuing their pre-emptive strikes ahead of the Wanni defences north of Uyilankulam, destroyed three LTTE bunkers killing four Tiger cadres while seriously injuring 10 others, in confrontations early on Saturday.

Separately, the military said that ground forces in retaliation to an LTTE offensive advance at general area Parappakandal, damaged two LTTE heavy guns dismantling attempts to regroup. “Precision strikes were carried out at LTTE artillery launching pads based on technical information from ground troops”, the military said.

It further said, in a location north west of Giant’s Tank, troops confronted an LTTE group killing six cadres. At the same time, the military maintained that LTTE casualties were not confirmed.

In another development, Archbishop of Colombo Oswald Gomis met President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday for a discussion on bolstering security measures in the newly liberated Silavathura and also in Mannar in the north.

The government-run paper, Daily News said that they discussed the welfare of residents of these areas and the problems they faced. The resettlement of displaced persons was also taken up.

The paper said that the Archbishop and the President also discussed the possibility of declaring the Madhu Church area as a “peace zone”.
