Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: Noted critic and educationist M. Leelavathi has expressed serious concern about the spurt in campus violence which even went to the extent of people being beaten to death. In her address, after receiving the Vayalar Literary Award here on Saturday evening, Prof. Leelavathi said she had great anxiety about the future of the State. Prof. Leelavathi said she was happy that she had been chosen for the Vayalar Award because she considered it to be an honour for literary criticism. There was a general impression that ‘inspiration’ was more important than ‘perspiration.’ Literary criticism is as important as creative literature. Therefore literary criticism must receive as much importance as creative writing, she said. Vayalar Rama Varma Trust president M.K. Sanoo presented the award, cash prize and a citation to Prof. Leelavathi. Poet O.N.V. Kurup welcomed the gathering. Trust member K. Jayakumar IAS and judging committee member D. Benjamin offered felicitations. Vayalar Saratchandra Varma, son of the late poet, read out the citation. C.V. Trivikraman, secretary, Vayalar Trust presented the report.
