The projects will be completed in two years

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken on Saturday announced that at the first meeting of the Urban Development Fund, five projects for Delhi costing Rs.187.55 crore and including road under-bridges (RUBs) at the Nizamuddin railway crossing and under the Sarita Vihar flyover were approved. Aimed at improving the movement of vehicular traffic in the city, these projects would be on track within three months and completed in two years.

Mr. Maken said no meeting of this fund had been convened since 2001 because of different parties being in power at the Centre and in Delhi. “So we decided to revive it and for a year we worked on these projects.” Finally, he said, on Friday, Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy approved the five projects for Delhi of which four would be constructed by the Delhi Development Authority.

“As for the fifth project, which is an underpass at Sarai Kale Khan, it is being constructed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Work on it had started four months ago. Here the DDA would be making its contribution of Rs.8.33 crore towards the cost of the project,” Mr. Maken added.

Stating that during the meeting Mr. Reddy had called upon the DDA to prepare plans for villages, residential areas and other big schemes so that they could be funded through the Urban Development Fund, Mr. Maken said the Ministry was keen to see that Delhi takes rapid strides on the path to development.

As for the projects approved, he said they had been cleared by the DDA Technical Committee and the Indian Railways, so there are no hindrances in their way now.

Biggest project

The biggest of these projects is the RUB at the Sarita Vihar flyover. It would pass under the railway line and the flyover and connect Okhla Industrial Area with Sarita Vihar. Three clover leaves would also be constructed as part of this Rs.127.74-crore project to make this section signal-free.

The other major project would be the RUB near Nizamuddin railway crossing.
