Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Health workers in the State, from this year, will start getting a recognition that was due to them for ten years. Thanks to a file-clearance drive launched by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy.

The file, which got entangled in the red tape, related to an assistance of Rs.10 lakh sanctioned by the Centre a decade ago for presenting the J.R.D. Tata Awards to the best health and family welfare workers of the State. It was placed before the Health Minister on the second day of the file-clearance adalat held by her at the Directorate of Health Services here on Saturday.

She also ordered that the awards be presented from this year. Selected health workers from the 14 districts of the State will start getting the award and a citation. The fund which was deposited in the treasury had grown to Rs.16 lakh which includes the interest for the last ten years.

A sum of Rs.1.4 crore was sanctioned for providing CT scan facility at the General Hospital, Ernakulam, when another file was taken up. The adalat also sanctioned Rs.99 lakh for buying equipment for the General Hospital, Alappuzha.. The adalat also settled a 12-year-old issue regarding regularising the service of J.P.H.N. Shiny. She was on leave for undergoing treatment after an accident. It was decided to regularise her service. As many as 2,032 of the 3,282 files were cleared at the two-day adalat.
