KOCHI: The government will distribute 10,000 scholarships of Rs.5,000 each to vocational and higher secondary students belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category, Education Minister M.A. Baby has said. President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the scheme on November 1. The Minister said here on Saturday that the total allocation for the scholarship programme was Rs.10. 2 crore this year. The Higher Secondary Department would receive Rs.5 crore out of this allocation. Out of the 10,000 scholarships, the higher secondary section would receive 9,000 scholarships while the remaining would be distributed among students in the vocational higher secondary section. The ratio of distribution in the order of science, humanities and commerce courses (in each school) is 2:1:1. Out of the 9,000 scholarships allocated for the higher secondary section, 7,600 would be earmarked for students in the general category while 1,200 scholarships would be given to students belonging to the SC/ST sections. Students who excelled in cultural and sports events and the physically and mentally challenged would receive 200 scholarships, the Minster said.
