Matching steps with the young

Staff Reporter

The run is part of the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon

Aimed at creating awareness on issues concerning the old

NEW DELHI: Hundreds of men and women in their advanced years will match steps with the younger generation this Sunday as they participate in the Harmony Senior Citizens’ Run.

Now in its third year, the run is part of the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon. Bollywoood stars Priyanka Chopra and Gulshan Grover and members of the Indian women’s hockey team led by Captain Mamta Kharab are expected to participate.

The run, according to Harmony for Silvers Foundation chairperson Tina Ambani, is aimed at promoting public awareness about the issues that concern the older generation and giving them a chance to participate in community events.

“The Harmony Senior Citizens’ Run is not about crossing the finishing line or winning prizes – it’s about living life to the fullest,” said Ms. Ambani. Supported by Harmony for Silvers Foundation, the Senior Citizens’ Run this year has attracted nearly 3,000 registrations, which is significantly more than 2,500 in 2006 and 1,789 in 2005. To keep up the morale of the participants, noted sportspersons and icons from the silver screen have also participated in the run in the past.

“We have had Juhi Chawla, Neetu Singh, Rishi Kapoor and Gulshan Grover participate in the run. This year again Gulshan Grover will be there and we will also have Priyanaka Chopra,” said Ms. Ambani. The Senior Citizens’ Run would cover a route of 4 km, beginning and concluding at the same point, the Central Civil Services Sports Ground on Vinay Marg opposite Nehru Park, from 6-15 a.m. onward.
