Basu welcomes withdrawal of judicial inquiry

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu has welcomed the West Bengal government’s decision to withdraw the judicial inquiry that it had ordered into the death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman.

“Yesterday’s decision [to withdraw the judicial inquiry] is a good one, though a little late,” he said, on the sidelines of a book release function at his residence here on Saturday. “How can two separate inquiries over the same issue carry on simultaneously,” he added, referring to the ongoing inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had on Friday announced the decision to withdraw the judicial inquiry so as to avoid any “overlapping” in the investigations.
