HYDERABAD: For 29-year-old Isaiah R. Sanam, it was a dream finish to the season. The archer from the city, training regularly at the AP Sports School (Hakimpet) under the guidance of SAAP coach P. Ravishankar, has struck gold in compound bow category of the Asian Grand Prix archery championship in Iran.
“Winning the gold in Iran was significant and not all that easy considering that an Iranian set a world record in the qualifying rounds but lost in the Olympic first round.
So, it was a struggle for me with the equipment too.
Initially, I was not sure about a medal but once I was third in the qualifying rounds, my confidence level shot up,” says the articulate archer in a chat with The Hindu.
Sanam tied with his rival Mohd. Reza of Iran with scores of 114\120. Then in the tie-breaker, it was again 10-10 for both.
In the second tie-breaker, while Reza messed up finishing with score of six, Sanam was better missing nine and scoring nine to emerge a clear winner.
Ironically, for Sana, his pet event doesn’t figure in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“I was told that it would be introduced in 2012 edition. But for the time being, the focus will be on the World Cup and also the Senior nationals in December this year,” says Sanam.
