KANCHEEPURAM: The district administration is believed to have granted special permission to quarry sand from the Palar in Madurantakam taluk for infrastructure work at Atomic Power Plant, Kalpakkam.
According to sources, the Public Works Department authorities went to Lakshmi Narayana Puram near Bhoothur in Madurantakam taluk on October 26 and laid an approach road for the movement of sand lorries. Residents protested saying that the village panchayat had obtained a stay against sand quarrying from the Madras High Court in 2006.
Revenue Department officials said that the district administration had granted special permission to the PWD to set up a quarry at exclusively to meet the requirements of the Kalpakkam plant.
