More rain likely in Puducherry

PUDUCHERRY: With no let-up in the rain due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal and the Met Department forecasting more rain, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Sunday said the government was taking all necessary steps to provide relief to affected persons.

The Chief Minister also announced that all schools and colleges in the Union Territory would remain closed on Monday.

“The Revenue Department has been asked to take stock of any affected persons and the government will provide relief accordingly,” he said.

Official sources said there had been no major water logging or crop loss due to the rain and if there was any damage it could be ascertained only after the rain stopped.

The depression is likely to cross the coast between Puducherry and Kaveli in Andhra Pradesh by Monday and this would bring more rain on Sunday night and Monday, they added.

Central kitchens ready

The sources said that the government machinery had been geared to meet any emergency situation and government schools and community halls had been kept open for people affected to take shelter.

The 11 central kitchens of the Education Department would be on standby in case of emergency evacuation.

According to them, till Sunday evening there had been no case of water logging in any residential area since the drains had been desilted well before the monsoon.

Water logging was reported in Sudhana Nagar.

In Nonankuppam area, a few houses had been affected by water logging and water was being pumped out from an old unused well. Some trees had uprooted in a few localities.

Control rooms

Officials were constantly monitoring the situation and control rooms have been set up at taluk and village levels.
