Registration of marriage

As per the Supreme Court Order, now registration of marriages is mandatory which will create a problems for the newly-weds. After some years the employers will ask before appointing to the jobs the registration number or marriage certificate just like a voter identity card. The authorities are required to make the rules simple and easy. On the other hand most of the population of the country are residing in rural areas and daily tens of thousand functions are solemnised and it is very difficult to register. Still child marriages are taking place in the country. The Government should popularise the system of registration and its pros and cons.

Bhubaneswar city is fast witnessing mall culture. Three big malls have come up in three different regions while a fourth one is taking shape. Advent of big malls indicates that the purchasing power has gone up. The big companies involved in retail business must have done ground survey before stepping into the capital city. I must say that these companies have arrived to cash in swelling money as well as inherent desire of people to come on a par with their big city counterparts.

I have recently come across a report that there was a product which crossed its expiry date.

That means, our regulators have a belief that these malls cannot do wrong. The back-to-back discount in sales needs to be looked into.

The dream to develop Orissa into an industrialised state seems to have run into a rough weather with most of the mega projects not able to make progress. Renowned industrial houses and companies have come to Orissa with huge investment proposals, but, of late there has been a sense of insecurity and uncertainty dogging the investors. Take the example of the POSCO project in Jagatsinghpur district. Even after two years of signing of the MoU, land for the project is yet to be acquired.

Added to it is the instances of some people detaining company officials while the administration and the police have turned mute spectators.

The recent assurance of the Chief Minister to provide necessary support to the project following his meeting with the Board of Directors of the South Korean company has created some hope among the investors. However, translating these assurances into action can only keep the investors in Orissa and help realize the much-talked-about industrialisation dream. Strong efforts from political leadership and opinion makers would certainly pave the way for taking industrialisation benefits to people.

Durga puja has gone but Laxmi Puja is on. Over the years, the number of pandals in the capital city has gone up manifolds adding to the burden of the police to manage law and order situation in this regard.

Time has arrived for the city police to check mushrooming of puja pandals.

It is necessary in the wake of terrorist attacks on religious places.

I hope the police would take note of this, and don’t let puja pandals go beyond the city’s carrying capacity.
