PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Nationalist Congress Party has urged the government to ensure that police in the Union Territory function impartially without yielding to political pressure. NCP unit president G. Sundaramoorthy said in a statement here that the party was concerned over the increasing number of murders and called for steps to check such crimes. RenamingThe government’s recent decision to rename the capital town of the Union Territory as ‘Pondicherry’ while retaining ‘Puducherry’ as the name of the territory had led to confusion among people in other States, he said. He urged the government to restore the name of Pondicherry for the town and the Union Territory. Mr. Sundaramoorthy asked the government to clarify its stand on free distribution of handloom clothes to the poor for ‘Deepavali.’ Flaying the government’s move to procure polyester goods under this scheme, he said the decision would affect the interest of the handloom weavers. He urged the government to take action to curb exploitation of the middle class by the real estate industry and private educational institutions.
