BHUBANESWAR: Majority trade unions on Sunday met here in the first State-level preparatory meeting to mobilise support for two-day-long nationwide satyagrah beginning from Dec 3 to 4. At the sponsoring committee meeting of trade unions here, leaders decided to extend support to the forthcoming agitation of state government employees as well teachers on October 30. The trade unions who participated in the meeting included CITU, AITUC, HMS, AICCPU and UT (LS). It was also decided that joint convention would be held at all industry centres of the State in the run up to the satyagraha. Trade unions would start holding their meetings from Rourkela and follow it up at Jharsuguda, Jajpur Road and Rayagada. Main demand“Our main demand is for framing of a comprehensive legislation for unorganised and agricultural labourers in consultation with trade unions. A concrete national programme to deal with unemployment, land reforms and action on violation of labour laws,” CITU vice-president Shivaji Pattnaik said. He said if the Union Government did not move on the 18-point demands moved by trade unions, then the Sataygrah would be converted into a general strike. “This time the general strike could be held for more than one days,” Mr. Pattnaik warned. The sponsoring committee planned to mobilise support of 50,000 workers for the satyagrah during December.
