Only Rs. 1,000 was given to the poor for the cremation of bodies HASSAN: People in Chennarayapatna have complained to Lokayukta Deputy Superintendent of Police Rama Naik about the inherent difficulties faced while dealing with government officials here. Mr. Naik had inspected the taluk office in Chennarayapatna on Saturday. For example, the administration of the Sandhya Suraksha Yojana, a new scheme launched by the Government recently wherein people aged above 65 years could avail of pension on the production of their voter identity card, has been made difficult as officials consistently demand a “service charge” of Rs. 20, while the prescribed fee is Rs. 5, some complained. They also said that for the past four months, money towards the cremation of bodies (to be given to the economically weaker sections) had not been released. After protests, a paltry sum of Rs. 1,000 was given for the purpose. ScrutinyWhen Mr. Naik scrutinised the attendance register, he found that some staff had not signed even in the afternoon. The tahsildar’s driver Swamy had been absent for two days without submitting of permission. Village accountant Bettappa instead had been assigned the job of driving the official’s vehicle.
