An elephant has been on the rampage after the death of its young one HASSAN: Farmers in Alur, Arakalgud and Sakleshpur taluks, who had been victims of drought and floods, have again suffered crop loss, now on account of elephant fury. For the past few days, wild elephants have been on a spree of destroying crops in villages adjoining forestland in the three taluks. Near Hampapura village in Alur taluk, a herd of eight elephants have destroyed crop in paddy fields. Farmers are scared of venturing out even during daytime for fear of being attacked by elephants. Electric shockOwing to the death of a young elephant owing to electric shock in Madihalli village about two months ago, its mother has been on the rampage ever since. The Department of Forests, in a bid to catch two elephants in Carodi village in Sakleshpur taluk, under “Operation Carodi,” had brought trained elephants from Bandipur forest. But before the operation could start, Dasara celebrations required them to be sent to Mysore. The operation was suspended for a few days. After Dasara, heavy rainfall in the region has forced the Forest Department to put the operation on hold as elephants generally remain confined to their habitat during this time.
