Firm opposition: Congress leaders M. Mallikarjun Kharge, N. Dharam Singh and H.K. Patil coming out of the Raj Bhavan after calling on Governor Rameshwar Thakur in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: A three-member Congress delegation led by KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Sunday and urged him not to invite BJP leader B.S.Yediyurappa to form a Government. Mr. Kharge told The Hindu that he presented copies of the editorials of several major newspapers which had categorically said that the only way out of the present political imbroglio was to opt for fresh Assembly elections. The Governor was also presented with details of a similar case wherein the then President, N. Sanjeeva Reddy, refused permission to the Congress to extend support to Jagjivan Ram soon after the party withdrew support to a government headed by Charan Singh. The President had then stated that political parties could change their stance in quick succession. The KPCC President said the BJP which had withdrawn support to the H.D. Kumaraswamy government and had also sought early elections had changed its stance in a fortnight obviously to get to the seat of governance. This was “highly unethical.” In another development, Congress leader Siddaramaiah is learnt to have come under criticism from his party leaders at a meeting held on Sunday. At a meeting of the party leaders in Bangalore, some of the leaders reportedly expressed displeasure that it would have been possible to form a Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition government if Mr. Siddaramaiah had not tried to split the Janata Dal (S) by holding parleys with Janata Dal (S) leader M. P. Prakash. The legislators are learnt to have expressed displeasure over another Congress leader D. K. Shivakumar for trying to split the Janata Dal (S) which ultimately resulted in that party deciding to realign with the BJP. Asked for his reaction on this issue, Mr. Kharge said: “it is baseless. Such rumours have been floated by some vested interests.”
