Oil spill off Ernakulam wharf

KOCHI: Traces of oil were found in the waters near the Southern Naval Command jetty on Sunday afternoon, due to suspected leakage of oil from a naval ship.

The Navy jetty abuts the extreme end of the Ernakulam Wharf and is near the sulphur berth of FACT. Cochin Port Trust sources said that the Navy was immediately informed about the incident and asked to take precautions. It was possible that some oil leaked along with waste pumped out of the ship, they said. No damage to marine environment has been reported so far. A Naval officer said that no report of oil or fuel spillage had been reported till evening. “It is possible that some paint must have fallen in to the water from a ship which was having its hull painted. The paint must have left a trail which resembled oil,” he said.

On being asked if the Coast Guard had taken precautions to contain the spillage, DIG (Kerala and Lakswadeep) of the Coast Guard V.D. Chafekkar said that personnel have been sent to do a first-hand assessment of the situation.
