TIRUNELVELI: Members of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Workers’ Union and Shops and General Workers’ Union observed fast at Vannerpet here on Sunday.
The protestors said ration shop salesmen were being accused and made scapegoats for bogus ration cards, which were actually enumerated, approved, printed and distributed by the officials of Departments of Revenue and Civil Supplies. “Even as the ration shop workers had to bear the stationery expenditure, they also had to face a shortage of 5 litre kerosene per barrel.”
Apart from not providing basic amenities to the ration shop workers, the loadmen of the Civil Supplies Corporation were being forced to work overtime and also on holidays for paltry sum of money, they alleged.

The agitators asked the authorities concerned to streamline the functioning of Public Distribution System in the district, which was not performing at the optimum level. According to them, action should be taken against the officials who were responsible for the circulation of bogus family cards. The tendency shown by officials concerned to put the irregularities found in the public distribution system on to the shoulders of workers posted at fair price shops should be discouraged.
Rather, proper enquiry should be conducted and the higher officials, who were responsible for the conduct should be punished, they said.
The employees demanded wage revision for their colleagues posted at godowns.
