on display: Visitors take a look at silk saris on sale at the exposition at Kuralagam’s administrative office in Chennai on Saturday. CHENNAI: The Handlooms and Textiles Department is planning to hold a national-level handloom exposition in the city in January, Handlooms and Textiles secretary Vishwanath Shegaokar told reporters here on Saturday. A State-level exposition would be held in Kanyakumari district soon. Launching the week-long exhibition-cum-sale of silk and cotton saris and household furnishing materials at Kuralagam in Broadway here, he said the exhibition would offer 236 new designs, besides those introduced at the exhibition organised in Puducherry last week. With this, the department introduced around 700 new designs this festival. Kancheepuram silk saris with three-dimensional designs and zari would be introduced in a fortnight. The sari was designed by Anna Society and was priced at Rs. 15,000. Initially, 100 saris would be launched and more would be produced based on demand, officials said. Anna Society had forayed into silk products such as photo frame, mouse pads, pencil holders and coasters, employing women self help group members, said designer K. Shanmugam Magesh. Regional Passport Officer Sumathi Ravichandran commissioned the design centre and the local area network (LAN) system connecting the 36 centres in the city. The LAN would put in place a web-based reporting system. At the design centres, customers could choose the design and it would be incorporated in the sari and the sari provided to them in 45 days. On sale at Kuralagam are silk saris starting at Rs. 2,500 and cotton saris starting at Rs. 250. The total cost of the products on sale is estimated at Rs. 200 lakh. A discount of 30 per cent is provided on cotton saris and 20 per cent on silk saris at the exhibition, which is on from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
