PUDUKOTTAI: They incurred an expenditure of about Rs.5,000 for carrying out minor repairs of benches and desks in Government Special Higher Secondary School in Mathur. More importantly, their endeavour helped put a couple of classrooms, where the furniture was stored for several years, back into use.
The Lions Club of Mathur, under a ‘Waste to wealth’ programme, volunteered to repair the furniture of the school. Earlier, the Club had implemented several programmes for the benefit of students.
A couple of carpenters and welders were pressed into service for repairing the wooden and steel furniture. It took a few weeks for the repairs to be completed, said Club president M. Muniappan.
With a view to encouraging students to participate in sports activities, the Club also set up a ball badminton court at the school campus.
At a function held at the school recently, Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Selvaraj handed over the furniture to school superintendent M.V. Meera Mohideen. He also declared open the ball badminton court.
Joint secretary of the Club S. Raju said free coaching would be given to students to impart special skills in ball badminton.
