CHENNAI/THANJAVUR: Four children were killed in two separate incidents of wall collapse in Thanjavur district on Sunday following rain, which has been lashing various parts of the State since Saturday.

Three girls, Deepa (12), Ezhilarasi (5) and Divya (4), all daughters of Rajaguru, a resident of Nandivanam near Marudanallur in Kumbakonam, died on the spot when the wall of their house fell on them in the early hours. In another accident, Gowtham (3), son of Kumbakonam resident Pughazhendi, died when a wall collapsed on him at his house on Kumarankudi East Street. The pattern of isolated to very heavy rain is expected to continue all over the Tamil Nadu coast in the next few hours, the Regional Meteorological Office said.

The low pressure trough, formed over the south-eastern bay off Chennai, is likely to cross the coast between Puducherry and Kavali on Monday evening. Rainfall averaged between 40 to 50 cm throughout the State.

The government has declared Monday a holiday for schools, colleges, polytechnics and law colleges all over the State.

“The depression is centred 420 km from the Chennai coast and we are continuously monitoring the movement of the cloud mass. Fishermen have been asked to keep off the sea and a distant cautionary alert has been issued at the Chennai port. Widespread rainfall can be expected over the next few hours,” R.V. Sharma, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, told The Hindu. The State government was stepping up flood relief activities throughout the State by deputing Cabinet Ministers for every district, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said.

Train services throughout the State were hit with trains running 30 minutes to two hours behind schedule. Barring a few delays in landing and take-off, there was no disruption or cancellation of flight services at the Chennai airports. Power production at the Neyveli power plant in Cuddalore continued to be hampered, with the State receiving only 400 MW of electricity on Sunday.Crops in Cuddalore and other delta districts were submerged.
