‘Women in Black’ protest in Bangalore

Special Correspondent

‘The Government needs to take its responsibility towards these workers seriously’

Bangalore: Vimochana, along with other women’s groups, will hold a demonstration on Tuesday to protest against the death of an 18-year-old garment worker, Renuka, on October 12, and draw the attention of the public to the plight of women workers in the industry.

The protesters, clad in black, will seek an independent probe into Renuka’s death. She was a minor at the time of being employed, said Vimochana in a press release. They will demand the setting up of a permanent, independent State mechanism to provide a space for workers to air their grievances. Empowering the Labour Commissioner to regularly inspect factories to prevent unfair labour practices and the setting up of a complaints committee within the Labour Department, with the help of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission and Karnataka State Women’s Commission, will be among their other demands.

“There are almost 1,000 garment factories in Bangalore alone, in which 5 lakh workers are earning a livelihood. The Government needs to take its responsibility towards these workers seriously, a majority of who are poor women, who come from as far as Ramnagaram and Chennapatna to work,” said members of Vimochana.

The “Women in Black” protest will be held from 5 p.m. at Subbiah Circle, Mission Road.
