TIRUPATI: A round-table organised here on Sunday with the representatives of all major political parties, intellectuals, officials, trade union leaders has unequivocally demanded the setting up of the Provident Fund Sub-Regional Office at Tirupati covering Chittoor and Nellore districts because they had a combined membership of 1.30 lakh PF beneficiaries working in as many as 2,200 factories, industries and business establishments. The meeting also noted with regret that repeated representations made to the Union Ministry of Labour had fallen on deaf ears and that despite the presence of no fewer than four MPs from Chittoor district, they neither took any interest on the issue nor even bothered to attend the round-table. Promises made TDP’s Rajya Sabha member, Durga Ramakrishna at least cared to send an SMS to the organisers through her mobile phone promising to use her good offices at Delhi to get the office set-up at Tirupati. Tirupati MLA, M. Venkatramana (Cong) also endorsed the demand and promised to lead a delegation to Delhi at his own cost to impress upon the leaders there on the issue. He also assured to raise the matter in the Assembly in the sessions due from November 5. CPI-M’s Chittoor district Secretary, K. Murali criticised the TRS leader, K. Chandrasekhar Rao for doing little in the matter during his stint as the Union Labour Minister though he had all the powers at his command. He underscored the need for the office at Tirupati which had in all, about one lakh workers engaged in the organised and the unorganised sectors.
