Tragic incident

This refers to the tragic death on Thursday of Milan Tanna, a Class 11 student of a school in Ahmedabad, while running round the ground as part of punishment for coming late.

Late-coming is a serious problem that has to be nipped in the bud and it is quite normal for schools everywhere to prescribe punishment to late-comers. It will amount to injustice to punctual pupils if late-comers are not punished.

Also, the authorities at the Narayana Guru School did not resort to extreme steps such as caning, branding, etc.; they simply asked late-comers to run round the ground. The school cannot be faulted. However, it is very unfortunate that the student died and the school should offer condolence to the parents.

N. Nagesh,

Chennai
