Trinamool alleges that Mamata’s vehicle was fired at, but police deny it
|
Kolkata: Three persons were killed in violence in Nandigram area of Purbo Medinipur district on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress leadership alleged that a bullet had been fired at party chief Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle, while on a visit to the area on Sunday. The police have denied the Trinamool’s allegation. Ms. Banerjee, however, claimed that the police were absent when the incident occurred. .
The latest casualties were reported from a camp in the Sherkhanchak area , State’s Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Raj Kanojia, told The Hindu.
There were reports of intermittent violence involving activists of the Trinamool Congress-backed Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh (Resistance against Land Eviction) Committee (BUPC) and supporters of the CPI(M) whose leaders have accused the BUPC for the overnight killings -- a charge that has been denied by the latter.
The zonal committee office of the CPI(M) was ransacked and later set on fire and the house of a local senior CPI(M) leader Ashok Bera, were among those to be attacked in the day’s violence.
The 12-hour bandh called by the BUPC in Purbo Medinipur district on Sunday in protest against the death of its supporters evoked mixed response.
