Let the people decide: Modi
Manas Dasgupta
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday declined to comment on the Tehelka exposè on the post-Godhra communal riots in the State in 2002.
Without referring to the exposè, Mr. Modi said he had decided not to react to the “abuses and criticism” being heaped on him from various quarters. It would be for the people to decide the truth and not for him to react to every “abuse hurled at him.”
Mr. Modi was speaking at a public rally in Surat, where the Nagarik Abhibhadan Samiti handed over new motorbikes to 37 persons whose vehicles were burnt at a rally attended by him at the same venue last week.
At the behest of Mr. Modi, the Samiti had promised to raise public donations from BJP sympathisers to replace the damaged vehicles. The BJP had accused the local Congress leaders of being behind the fire at the parking lot outside the rally venue. Mr. Modi criticised the Congress and the Centre for “delaying” insurance payment for the damaged vehicles.
