Postal franchisees

This is with reference to ‘Postal franchisees gaining in popularity’ (The Hindu 18-10-2007).

It is unfortunate to note that the 150-year-old Department of Posts, run by the Central Government all these years, is likely to be gradually privatised because of our nation’s ill-policy.

Franchising the service is nothing but a burden thrust on the public to shell out more money as commission to the franchisees appointed by the department.

The Centre should reconsider the franchisee system and entrust the service to the departmental staff, adopting innovative and revenue-generating methods!

Rejoinder

With reference to the electrical wire close to the parapet wall of the foot overbridge at St. Thomas Mount Railway Station, following is the clarification.

The particular high-voltage electrical wire running parallel to the parapet wall was inspected by Traction Distribution Department of Chennai Division and found that it was only an earth wire meant for safety protection of the system and human beings.

There is nothing to worry about this earth wire which is well protected.

Problems in LPG supply

Of late, there are lot of complaints against an LPG dealer based at Vandalur.

Consumers say that even after a month of booking, their supplies are not made and the dealer keeps the telephone receiver inactive to avoid taking messages.

There are three different dealers operating from three different places to cater to the needs of Maraimalai Nagar.

It is suggested to have a separate single distributor based at Maraimalai Nagar, bringing all three dealers under one fold to effectively cater to the needs of the 8,000-odd consumers.

Old age, widow pension

The old age and widow pension schemes of the Tamil Nadu Government are really a boon to the poorer sections of the public.

After the DMK Government came to power, the pension amount was raised from Rs.200 to Rs.400.

But unfortunately the pension is not received by the beneficiaries regularly. The pension is sent by money order to the recipients.

For example, in the Chromepet area, more than 200 people have not received their old age, widow pensions for the period of July, August and September till now. Enquiring with the taluk office at Tambaram, we were informed that 1,500 people had been omitted for allotment of funds for pension. The Government should have informed the public of the reasons for the delay, through the media, instead of making the aged and destitute women run from pillar to post to enquire about their pension dues.

At least in future, will it send pensions promptly to the beneficiaries? If there is delay, it should be notified to the public.

Parking of vehicles

Several vehicles are parked on Arunachalam Road near S. S. R. Pankajam theatre.

The width of the road being narrow, the parking of vehicles causes traffic hazards, obstructing the free movement of two-wheelers, cars etc.

I appeal to the traffic police in the Virugambakkam police station to take an immediate action in this regard.

FOB near railway station

There is a foot overbridge near the Ambattur railway gate LC06.

But there are no landing facilities for commuters to reach the second and third platforms.

For many years, commuters have been getting down near platform No. 1 and walking on the foot overbridge near the platform to reach the second and third platforms.

The Railways assured that action would be taken to provide landing facilities. But till date no facility has been provided.

Considering the plight of school students, senior citizens and women, will the Railways take action, at least now?

Autorickshaw fares

The only way to stop the exploitation of commuters by autorickshaw drivers is that the distance travelled should be known and this is possible only if the meters are switched on. The rates should be based on kilometres travelled. There should be a consensus among public and drivers.

Let the public and autorickshaw drivers meet and arrive at a decision on rates per km.

Restore bus routes

At present 17-M is the only service available between Vadapalani and Broadway via Mount Road.

Most of these buses are operated between Iyappanthangal and Broadway, while a few services are run between Vadapalani and Broadway.

Travelling on this route is an ordeal during morning and evening rush hour. Commuters have to wait for hours in the evening at stops such as LIC, TVS etc. to go to Kodambakkam, Vadapalani etc. Bus routes such as 25, 25-B, 25-A etc. have been totally withdrawn. There is no bus available for reaching the CMBT at Koyambedu from these stops. Considering the number of offices/establishments located in the Gemini, Thousand Lights, T.V.S., and Arts College areas, it is not clear why the MTC authorities have not taken any steps for mitigating the difficulties of the travelling public. It is high time the MTC restored the 25 and 25-B routes, at least in the best interest of the commuters, in addition to plying vestibule buses on route No. 17-M.

M.N. Sundaresan,

Vadapalani
