It is ironic that a top Telugu film star’s daughter, inspired by her father’s reel-life escapades, ran away with her boy friend leaving her parents shattered. Teenage love is glorified in Telugu cinema unmindful of the baneful influence such themes leave on immature minds. A tenth class girl was shown defying her parents and the social norms for the sake of love and this defiance of parents and teachers by teenagers and students is picturised as heroic. No wonder the influence of bad Telugu cinema affected the daughter of the actor too and it highlights the need to run Telugu films on healthy lines. T.S. Rao Visakhapatnam Not a ‘homely’ adviceHome Minister K. Jana Reddy has asked the public to ignore minor offences of the police. He should clarify whether rape by the police is a minor offence so that the human rights activists can be silenced. S.K. Sharma Visakhapatnam Extend local trainThe local train between Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram reaches Vizianagaram at 7.05 p.m. and will leave only the next morning at 6.15 for Visakhapatnam. Instead of idling in Vizianagaram, it can be extended up to Srikakulam to reach there around 9.15 p.m. and again leave there next morning around 5.15 which will be very helpful to daily wage earners. M. Kiran Visakhapatnam Ignored and neglectedWaltair division has become nobody’s baby, duly orphaned by the powers that be. With deliberate parochialism, the East Coast Railway authorities are bent upon destroying and denigrating the division by decreasing the existing reservation facilities, passenger amenities and extending trains to Bhubaneswar, diverting trains via Duvvada ignoring a city of 16 lakh population and with the highest income of Rs.2,500 crores a year in the Indian Railways. As already suggested, only a pragmatic Chief Minister like Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy can achieve separate railway zone for Vizag by impressing upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi. S. Gopala Sastry Visakhapatnam ‘Gandhigiri’The ‘Shantikosam’ programme for attracting naxals to surrender and join the mainstream is a right Gandhian step, after all other corrective steps of combing, ambushing, shoot-at-sight and other operations failed. It is said that the programme is bearing fruit and many naxalites have started surrendering to the police. They are also being given the prize they carried on their head for enabling rehabilitation. K. Nehru Patnaik Visakhapatnam Unhealthy practiceThe Health Department is not serious about the use of acids and colours on fruits and vegetables. It will badly affect the health of the public. The Government should take steps immediately to ban and initiate action on those indulging in use of material hazardous to health. Paidi Simhachalam Visakhapatnam Think of falloutMany political parties are making a hue and cry over the issue of increasing the minimum support price for paddy. These parties are demanding an MSP of Rs.1,000 a quintal for paddy on a par with wheat. I wonder whether any of these parties had a strategy to regulate the prices of rice in the open market after raising MSP? One should not forget that people of this State are depending on rice to address their frugal needs, the cost of which is round Rs.15 a kg. Once the MSP is increased, the price of rice will also be increased further and common man will have to suffer a lot to buy it for a higher price. I request the political parties to do some thinking over this issue. D.V. Subba Rao Kapulapalem, Yanam
