‘Karnataka is one of the leading States in floriculture’ BANGALORE: The international flower auction platform, expected to provide a boost to the floriculture sector in Bangalore region, is to be launched within the next two weeks. FacilitiesDisclosing this to presspersons here on Saturday, Development Commissioner Sudhakar Rao said that the platform will be opened around Deepavali, and that cold storage and other facilities had been provided to the auction platform. Built at a cost of Rs. 10.5 crore on a five-acre area, the auction centre had been formally inaugurated in January this year. “Floriculture is a sunrise industry and Karnataka is one of the leading States in floriculture,” said Mr. Rao. Initially, exporters are expected to buy flowers from the growers and eventually flower buyers from abroad are expected to participate in the auctions, he added. There are around 20 foreign buyers of Indian flowers, who contribute nearly 80 per cent of India’s exports. Navneesh Sharma, Deputy General Manager of Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, said that there was also a proposal to extend the crop insurance scheme to the floriculture sector. The Union Government has been assessing the proposal, and the insurance could be extended to the sector, he added. A proposal seeking subsidy under the National Horticulture Mission for replanting rose plants is also under consideration, he added.
