SENSITISATION: NCC cadets being explained on the ill-effects of tobacco use at BHEL Kailasapuram Club in Tiruchi on Sunday. TIRUCHI: Cautioning that smoking was the root cause for a host of vices right from alcoholism to immoral behaviour, speakers at the ‘Anti-tobacco anti-liquor awareness’ campaign organised by the Rotaract Clubs of BHEL City and Centenary on Sunday, urged youths not only to desist from cultivating the habit but also prevail upon the community to keep away from the ill-effects. Rotaract Club members, NSS cadets and NSS volunteers and youths of the BHEL Township, undertook a pledge to eschew tobacco and signed on the Anti-Tobacco and Anti-Liquor banner, in the presence of S. Karunakaran, General Manager, Modernisation, BHEL; K. Alagusundaram, Assistant Governor, Rotary District 3000; P. Manoharan, Deputy General Manager-HR, BHEL; and D. Mahalingam, Secretary, Kailasapuram Club and Ortho Consultant. The BHEL officials committed the sustained support of the organisation for the anti-tobacco campaigns and Dr. Mahalingam said the awareness campaigns would be carried out in all the 15 schools in the BHEL Township. Lilly Pushpam, Senior Officer-Community Health Systems, Medico-Social Health, BHEL Hospital, explained how one gets into smoking from the stage of consuming betel nuts, and from then on to speaking lies, indulging in malpractices, alcoholism and immoral activities leading to HIV/AIDS. “Much damage in store”It was not easy to get spoilt, but the moment one took a step on the evil ladder, much damage was in store, she warned, urging youths to preserve cultural and humanitarian traits for which the country is known. V. Raghunathan, Senior Purchase Officer, Stainless Steel Tube Plant, BHEL, made a presentation to make the students understand the impact of tobacco consumption on various body parts. He explained the chemical reactions taking place in the bodies of the smoker and the people around them. Samuel Christdoss, Advisor for both clubs, presented an overview of the programme. J. Udhayashankar, Immediate Past District Rotaract Representative, said a decision was taken at the programme to conduct an anti-tobacco awareness rally in Tiruchi in December involving thousands of Rotaract members, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets from the seven districts in the jurisdiction of Rotary District 3000.
